Your textbook offers a six-step “Privacy
Strategy” for protecting one’s own privacy. The steps include:
1) Remove private information
2) Correct inaccuracies
3) Subvert invasion of privacy practices
4) Limit cookies
5) Download software to protect your computer
from threats to your privacy
6) Continually monitor threats
In a thoughtful, thorough discussion board post give your responses to the following:
How important is your privacy to you? How many
of these “steps” do you already practice? How effective do you feel
they are/would be? Which of those steps just seem like they would be expecting
too much (inconvenient/unrealistic) to implement? Are there OTHER steps you
currently take to protect your privacy? Some people have said that for those
who participate in social media there is NO reasonable expectation of privacy.
Do you agree or disagree? Etc.
Your initial posts are due on Thursday, June 30
by end of the day (11:59 PM). You will also want to respond to the posts of at least
TWO class colleagues. This should be complete by end of the day Saturday (7/2).
During your discussions, ask questions about their perspectives, and respectfully
offer some of yours in return. The more you can engage with your colleagues,
the more everyone learns. It will ALWAYS be best to go beyond simply saying,
“Great post, couldn’t agree more.” At LEAST say why. Of course, our
standing “Adhominem-Attack-Free Zone” remains in effect. Should any
questions or concerns arise, please reach back out to me.
